Each holiday season from November through December Toronto's Distillery District is transformed into a European style Christmas market. Little wooden huts are set up for vendors to house fudge, Christmas ornaments and victorian sugarplums.
The sugarplums, made famous by The Nutcracker and Christmas classic, The Night Before Christmas are made up of nuts, driend fruit and brandy and are dusted with sugar. They're not nearly as sickly sweet as the name would suggest.
The centre of the Distillery is fitted with a giant fir tree, a carousel and a stage of carollers. My favourite installation this year was the pink Christmas tree forest, oh what a fairytale!
Now anyone who as previously patronized a Christmas market knows the visit would not be complete without a cup of mulled wine. The warmth of the spirit and festive spices are just what one needs to stave off the cold while perusing the glittering Christmas lights. If you're like me and know your experience would be left for want without your mulled wine then be sure to visit Toronto's market between Friday and Sunday as the cobbled streets are only licensed on the weekend.
