Little Miss Sunshine State

Being from eastern Canada, Florida is a natural vacation spot for my family.  I've been there so many times it has begun to feel like my second home.  We last went there in March of 2013 and stayed in Homestead, right by the Everglades.

Here I am with some turkey vultures, re-enacting Hitchcock's, 'The Birds'.  These birds are actually a riot to watch.  They bully the alligators around and actually made off with a man's coat while he was distracted photographing the wildlife.

One thing you must try when your in the Everglades is the alligator.  We went to Miccosukee Tribe of Indians restaurant and shared some as an appetizer.  It tastes like a cross between a fish filet and chicken.
The sight of palm trees instantly makes me happy.  I love when the roads are double lined with them, it reminds me of Hole's album 'Celebrity Skin'.

The photos of these birds were taken at Robert is Here Fruit Stand, where they make fantastic milkshakes full of fresh fruit!  I had the Cherry Key Lime.
This is how I imagine Barbie's house would have looked like in the sixties.

This is the Strangler Fig tree, it actually begins as a vine and winds its way up a neighbouring tree towards the sunlight, strangling the original tree and leaving it for dead in the process.

While we were in the keys we had lunch at Mrs. Mac's Kitchen, I loved the sink in the lavatory and had myself a cheeky Margarita.

One of my favourite places to visit was the Kennedy Space Centre, which was an original Nasa launch site.  It's fascinating to see all the old the old rockets!

Out of curiosity I had to pick up some of the 'Astronaut Ice Cream', it was freeze-dried Neapolitan.  It has the consistency of spongy chalk and melts into a warm lump in your mouth.  Definitely wouldn't have it over the real thing!
I think one of the reasons Florida makes me so happy is that everything is painted in pastels.  All the houses look like St. Valentine's conversation hearts as you whip past them on the freeway.  In The Keys they've even painted the concrete barriers!
Look out for my post on urban exploring in The Keys next week!
